Subject(s): Summary: Malnutrition in hospitalized patients is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. It is estimated that up to one-third of patients admitted to a hospital are malnourished and that the majority of those patients' nutritional status will decline during admission without appropriate nutrition care. The latest Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project data show that 7.1% of hospitalized patients received a diagnosis of malnutrition, which is an increase from the previous rate (3.2%) but still significantly lower than the estimated prevalence, illustrating the need for better identification of malnutrition.
