Hand in hand : value analysis and risk management / James Russell, Denise Russell

A hospital's value analysis department engages collaboratively with many other departments, including infection control, performance improvement, patient safety, employee health, and, of course, nursing leadership. However, its relationship with risk management is one of the most crucial. Usually, when these two divisions get together, a negative outcome has either already occurred or has the immediate potential to occur. In a successful hospital leadership environment, these two sectors must work together with expedience, fluidity, and coordination for the benefit of all concerned. Two examples of overlap between value analysis and risk management responsibilities are product recalls and medical device malfunctions. Case studies are presented to illustrate how the invaluable collaboration of these departments can ensure safe care and positive outcomes. Risk management is responsible for identifying and investigating opportunities to keep patients, staff, and visitors safe in their facility. This is primarily achieved through observation and communication with other departments.
