The paradigm underlying the Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs) for the United States and Canada allows powerful new methods of assessing nutrient intakes of groups. Thus, we are concerned about the inappropriate application of the DRIs in the article by Beasley et al in the September 2020 issue of the Journal. The authors’ stated objective was to compare intakes of participants in the Women's Health Initiative Long Life Study (WHILLS) to DRIs for nutrients reviewed in an Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics position statement. Unfortunately, they did not follow the guidelines for using DRIs to assess intakes of groups, as originally published by the Institute of Medicine (IOM) and reiterated in other sources (eg, see Institute of Medicine, Food and Nutrition Board4; Trumbo et al; Barr et al; Murphy et al; Murphy and Barr).
