In October 1917, a group of dietitians was invited by a handwritten notice to "come together in conference" to discuss how they could assist the government in conservation efforts for World War I. Members of this group had intended to avail of the opportunity at an American Home Economics Association's (AHEA) annual meeting to discuss these very issues, but the AHEA opted to postpone its meeting to accommodate obligations to World War I-related activities. Rather than delay the conversation on this and other important issues any longer, these dietitians convened their own meeting in Cleveland, OH-a meeting that became the forerunner to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics∗ Annual Meeting, now called the Food & Nutrition Conference & Expo (FNCE).
