The authors' organization is a Level I trauma center with over 600 beds situated in Camden, NJ, a city known for high levels of poverty and mission-based care. Their patients are generally underserved, vulnerable, and medically fragile. As an organization, they want to invest in their existing expert clinicians who express a desire to grow as leaders; they recognize that frontline managers are the key to providing the safest and highest-quality services. Their senior leadership team identifies potential successful leaders from clinical nurses and advanced practice nurses based on their ability to listen to their colleagues, work toward consensus, and acknowledge the needs of the group. Their senior leaders have adopted five specific transformative actions that support this commitment to change: 1. Be a role model. 2. Be inspirational. 3. Be willing to challenge the status quo. 4. Empower others. 5. Lead from the heart.
