Connor talks about the role of sponsors in supporting the work of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and their members. During her career as a research scientist, she had few dealings with the food or pharmaceutical industries; she was not in charge of their research group, which in any case consisted of like-minded individuals. It was her volunteer work with the Academy--a large organization whose members work in a myriad of practice areas and who have an equally wide array of beliefs and opinions--that brought her into contact with the food industry and sponsorship. After all, their clients, patients, and customers purchase and eat foods.
