This paper describes the Kulintang music of the maranao and its evolution from its pre colonial beginnings to contemporary times, from a local musical tradition in Lanao to that which is appreciated and recognized here and abroad, among intellectuals and in some sectors of modern Filipino pop music. The continuing dynamism of the Kulintang could be traced partly to the fact that the communities in Mindanao that nurture it have successfully resisted colonial conquest.
