In April 2020, unemployment hit the 15-year high of 17.7% with the economy pratically shut starting mid-March to counter the spread of COVID-19. About 7.25 million Filipinos, three times more than in the same month in 2019, suddenly found themselves out of work as Metro Manila and other parts of the country were placed under Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ).
