When greater force is put on the same metal bar, it may either break or stay bent. The metal bar is resilient to the extent that it can return to its original shape. Children growing up in an environment characterized by poverty, violence, substance abuse and parents' mental problems are likely to develop pyschological and social problems themselves, including poverty, violent behavior, substance abuse and mental problems. Some such children, however grow up to be healthy, successful citizens. these children are call resilient. adults, as well as children, who experience potentially traumatic events, such as war, terrorist attacks or simply the death of a family member, often suffer significant psychological and social problems.
