Subject(s): Summary: Numerous studies suggest that emotional intelligence, adversity quotient, and work motivation play an important role in leadership and management. Understanding trait emotional intelligence helps academic managers to make a better decision, be more engaged in work, influence others more effectively, and create a right mood for the job. Knowledge of adversity quotient®, on the other hand, helps the academic managers to adapt to adversities and move forward to reach institutional goals. Lastly, knowledge of work motivation helps them to offset a stream of negative thoughts to engage them in work-related activities. This study aimed to determine the relationship between nurse academic manager's emotional intelligence, adversity quotient, and work motivation, and to determine the predictive ability of trait emotional intelligence and adversity quotient to work motivation. A descriptive correlational research design was used to determine the relationship of nurse academic manager's emotional intelligence, adversity quotient and work motivation, and to determine the predictive ability of trait emotional intelligence and adversity quotient to work motivation. A total of 55 nurse academic managers participated in the twenty (20) universities/schools with a nursing program; selected through purposive sampling with the following criteria: the person currently holds administrative position and plays an important role in executing both administrative tasks and academics. The instruments include: (1) Demographic Profile; (2) Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire- Short Form; (3) Adversity Response Profile®; and (4) Work Extrinsic and Intrinsic Motivation Scale. Multiple regression was used to test the predictive ability of trait emotional intelligence and adversity quotient to work motivation where all the trait emotional intelligence dimensions and adversity quotient® core dimensions were entered simultaneously as predictors. The findings showed that Trait Emotional Intelligence had significant negative regression weights while Adversity Quotient® had a significant positive weight. This means that only adversity quotient® significantly predict work motivation. Out of the four subscales of adversity quotient®, only factors control, (r=0.361, p<0.01) and origin and ownership (r =0.320, p<0.05) were found to predict work motivation. This study presumes that understanding one's adversity response is vital to human performance. Even though the primary concern of education is academic performance, there is evidence that schools and colleges should not and cannot neglect the development of adversity response because it may influence nurse academic managers' work motivation.
