I have been thinking lately about what choice means in maternity care, particularly in relation to two documents released in the past year: Intrapartum Care of Healthy Women and Their Babies during Childbirth, a clinical guideline from the United Kingdom's National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE, 2014) and Levels of Maternal Care (2015), the second Obstetric Care Consensus from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine (SMFM).
