Similar to payment for services provided in other settings, the Medicare payment rules require a proper certification and subsequent recertification of the medical necessity for inpatient or Medicare Part A skilled nursing facility ("SNF") services. It is the SNF's responsibility to ensure that the certifications and recertifications are obtained timely and maintained in the patient recorda; however, the physicians and nurse practitioners caring for the residents are responsible for making the medical determinations that services are needed.
