A Clinical nurse's perspective on magnet recognition : Kirsten Drake is your staff prepared? /

By: Series: Nursing Management. 46 : 7, page 47-49 Publication details: July 2015.ISSN:
  • 0744-6314
Subject(s): Summary: Nurses pride themselves on delivering the best care for their patients and being recognized as leaders in their field, and Magnet-recognized organizations pride themselves on nursing excellence. However, when the announcement is made welcoming The Joint Commission or the Department of Health, most nurses want to run and hide or go home early to avoid being chosen to speak on behalf of their colleagues. This is also the case when the Magnet appraisers are on campus for a site visit. This article discusses how leaders can assist clinical nurses to participate fully, and positively, in preparation for and during the visit. As a clinical nurse, it was most helpful for the author to know the overall purpose and context of the Magnet site visit. Practice, questions, answers, priorities, and details all enabled her to understand her role in the process and how to voice her nursing competencies and successful patient outcomes.
