A decade ago, experts predicted that the nursing workforce would peak at 2.2 million by 2012. To their surprise, it grew to 2.7 million. Along with a surge of new nursing graduates, delayed retirement by nurses from the baby boom era has had a significant impact on the growth of the RN workforce. Researchers note that "this trend, which largely predates the recent recession, extended nursing careers by 2.5 years after age 50 and increased the 2012 RN workforce by 136,000 people."
