What is vitamin K2 and does it have an impact on bone health? / Eleese Cunningham - May 2016 - Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics 116 : 5, page 888 .

The discovery of vitamin K has its origin in the 1930s, when vitamin K was identified as playing an essential role as a coenzyme in the biological reactions involved in normal blood coagulation. Vitamin K is a generic name for a group of compounds with a common chemical structure: phylloquinone (vitamin K1) is the predominant dietary form found in vegetables; menaquinones (vitamin K2) are synthesized by bacteria, and exist in various forms with side chains of different lengths; and there is also a synthetic form, menadione (vitamin K3).
