Nutrition-focused physical exam hands-on training workshop / Beth Mordarski - May 2016 - Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics 116 : 5, page 868-869 .
The prevalence of malnutrition in hospitalized patients is very high, at 30% to 50%. However, the number of patients diagnosed with malnutrition by physicians is as low as 3%. This gap is reflective of dysfunctional systems within the hospital to identify patients at risk and then subsequently to diagnose malnutrition in a standardized way. Nurses, registered dietitian nutritionists (RDNs), and nutrition and dietetics technicians, registered, can screen patients, but RDNs are the primary health care providers who should conduct comprehensive assessments of at-risk patients for the purpose of identifying malnutrition.
